First Few Weeks as a Councillor

It has been a whirl-wind few weeks for me as a new councillor, but I think I am beginning to find my feet. It has been difficult working out my new role, organising my surgeries and learning about the structure of the council.

Coming in at the same time that we are trying to negotiate a budget for 2018-19 has been a particular challenge. Sometimes it seems like the current administration are learning as they go, just the same as I am!

I have already managed a few casework successes that I am proud of. My ambition before becoming a councillor was to be a bridge between the local community and the council. Since November I have helped constituents resolve issues with fly-tipping, paving issues and anti-social behaviour. I have raised issues with Police Scotland, had the privilege of meeting some of the longest standing members of our community at the Mortified Money Lunch, voted for LGBT inclusive education and met with community groups looking to build a better Rutherglen for the future.

It has already been a huge privilege to represent Rutherglen, but I am starting to feel like I am making a positive impact on the community – that would be the greatest privilege of all.
